Mechanically, Cadillac's solid engineering continued to lead the industry. The displacement of the robust V-8 engine increased to 341 cubic inches, and improvements for 1928 included offset cylinder blocks, parallel connecting rods, a horizontally mounted starter motor, a single exhaust system, an oil level gauge, and an engine-mounted oil filter. In addition, the new fully synchronized three-speed transmission provided much smoother shifts, and new double-acting Delco hydraulic shock absorbers offered a more comfortable ride. Cadillac advertised "Fifty body styles and types: Five hundred color and upholstery combinations," while the 1928 New York Auto Show catalog boasted "Colors from nature's own study." The strategy of allowing customers to personalize their production cars was well received, and soon Cadillac buyers began ordering their favorite colors and fabrics from the vast array of available options, with delivery possible in as little as three to seven weeks for Fisher-bodied models. Cadillac celebrated record sales in 1929, marking the most successful year in GM's history to date. The new and improved 341-B series models entered production at the Clark Avenue plant in Detroit in August 1928, and while outwardly quite similar to the 1928 341-A, numerous improvements provided a significant leap forward in ease of operation, safety, and reliability. The 1929 Cadillac 341-B models were immediately recognizable by their relocated parking lights in the crowns of the front fenders, along with the exclusive use of bright chrome work. Shatterproof safety glass and reliable electric windshield wipers were standard safety features in 1929, along with the new duplex mechanical brakes, which used internal shoes and required less pedal pressure than before. The new fully synchronized manual transmission provided unprecedented ease of driving, while Cadillac's V-8 engine offered greater durability thanks to its improved lubrication system.
